Two English centre-backs, the big question at the moment is whether Harry Maguire (€5.5m) will recover from an ankle injury in time to play in England’s opening match against Croatia on Sunday 13th June. Assuming that he does make a full recovery, given both Maguire and his partner John Stones (€5.5m) cost the same amount and represent the same national side, the choice between the two comes down to which offers more attacking potential. Currently for England Maguire has three goals in 32 appearances, including two in his last five matches, while Stones has scored two times in 42 matches. Maguire also has the edge when it comes to their career records as the current Manchester United captain averages a goal every 17 matches Stones averages a goal approximately every 24 matches. However, when it comes to their club form this season Stones has scored five times for Manchester City in just 33 matches, whilst Maguire has just two goals in 52 appearances. Given the current uncertainty around Maguire’s fitness, the choice at this moment in time is John Stones. However, if Maguire is deemed healthy enough to play by the time the matches roll around then the choice is not so clear-cut.
