Ethan Quinn vs Jordan Thompson prediction
Jordan Thompson arrives in Houston as the No.6 seed and eager for a deep run to try and rekindle the form of last year, which saw him rise to a career-high 26 in the world.
The Aussie No.3’s frustrations so far in 2025 are largely due to a niggling calf injury that helped put paid to his Australian Open hopes in January and left him insisting he needed to take time off to fully recover.
The 30-year-old only returned to the Tour in Indian Wells earlier this month, falling to a first-round loss in the desert, before wins over Marcos Giron and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard were followed by a 7-5 6-4 loss to top seed Alexander Zverev in the third round in Miami.
Thompson will be buoyed by that run and narrow defeat, but Quinn’s big-serve and heavy forehand offer significant danger signs for the seed with the Californian’s playing style seeing him likened to his towering compatriot John Isner. Indeed, the 21-year-old took a set off Thompson when the Sydney-born star won their only previous meeting in Charleston three years ago.
Quinn has had a busy start to the year since narrowly losing in Q2 at the Australian Open, picking up some solid result on the USA’s hardcourts in Dallas, Delray Beach and San Diego before coming through qualifying to lose in the first round at Indian Wells and Miami respectively.
The switch to clay is likely to hinder the World No.135’s hopes of an upset, but if he can use the home support to his advantage and get off to a strong start, the chances of causing Thommo another scare will increase.
