Miami Masters champion Jakub Mensik will hope for better fortunes in his second match of the clay swing.

The 19-year-old Czech suffered a surprise loss to wildcard Yannick Hanfmann in his opener in Munich and faces a potentially tricky encounter with Ethan Quinn in the Spanish capital. 

The American qualifier upset Jordan Thompson on the clay in Houston and came through qualifying in Barcelona and now Madrid to chalk up some solid progress on the dirt. 

A 6-3 6-4 victory over Dusan Lajovic in the first round will give a boost to his hopes of cracking the top 100 in the rankings this year and he’ll hope to take advantage of any creases in his Czech opponent’s clay-court game. 

Mensik reached the third round in Madrid on debut last year and if he hits anywhere near the form that saw him prevail in Miami, he’ll be too strong for Quinn.
