Wildcard Ethan Quinn has been basking in the headlines after marking his first ever clay-court match on the ATP tour with a shock comeback win over sixth seed Jordan Thompson. 

The 21-year-old, ranked 130 in the world, hit back to triumph 4-6 6-4 6-3 against the Aussie, demonstrating grit in the clutch moments by saving nine of the 13 break points he offered up. 

Quinn will now face fellow American Colton Smith who continued his run from qualifying in Houston with an emphatic 6-2 6-2 demolition of another Aussie, James Duckworth. 

The 22-year-old hit 12 winners and saved the only break point he faced, while taking Duckworth’s serve apart on six of the 10 opportunities he created. 

Smith, who has yet to drop a set in three matches at the tournament, beat Quinn 1-6 6-1 6-4 in their only previous meeting in his title run in the Cleveland Challenger back in January and we are backing the qualifier’s greater experience on the dirt and at this tournament to be crucial in seeing him into the last eight.
