Elise Mertens faces Diana Shnaider in the round of 16 in Stuttgart with a potential quarter-final with top seed Aryna Sabalenka on the horizon.

The Belgian put aside some indifferent results of late to down Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6 6-2 to tee up a second ever meeting with eighth seed Shnaider.

Back in 2023 Mertens eased to a 6-0 6-4 success over the Russian on the hard courts of Monterrey and will hope a return to the sort of form that led her to the Doha title in February can prolong her stay at this tournament. 

The 21-year-old Shnaider is a tougher proposition two years on and if she can channel her power in the right way, she may well take some beating.

We are going for the upset in terms of seeding, with Mertens capable of outclassing anyone on her day, but it could go either way with both players taking a set.
