Elena Rybakina has reached the latter stages of a few tournaments already this season but has suffered close losses which have derailed her chances of a title. She reached the semi-finals of the Abu Dhabi Open and took the first set against Belinda Bencic but lost in three.
She made another semi-final appearance in Dubai but lost in three sets to Mirra Andreeva. Her recent form has been less impressive, as she lost in the second-round of the Miami Open. Rybakina has three clay court titles on the WTA Tour and would love to add a fourth this season.
She faces Bianca Andreescu who won her first match since her return from a long injury layoff. She converted all four of her break points on her way to easily defeating McCartney Kessler 6-2 6-4 in the first-round.
They’ve never played each other on clay but Rybakina leads the head-to-head 2-0, having won their latest encounter in the first round of Dubai two years ago. Andreescu will be encouraged by her first win since her return, but we believe Rybakina is good value to start her campaign with a straight sets win.
