Ekaterina Alexandrova has made a really encouraging start to her clay court season with two fine showings in her opening tournaments on the surface. She made the semi-finals of the Charleston Open, which included a fine win against third seed Qinwen Zheng, before losing a close three-set match with eventual winner and top seed Jessica Pegula.

In Stuttgart, she beat Mirra Andreeva and exacted revenge on Pegula to make another semi-final but came up short against Jelena Ostapenko, who would also go on to win her respective title. Despite such difficult losses, Alexandrova must be confident of a deep run here.

However, she does have a really tough assignment in the second-round against Olga Danilovic. The Serbian made it 10 wins out of 11 on clay this season with a straight sets win over two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka.
