Ekaterina Alexandrova comes into Stuttgart on a solid arc of form.

The Russian world number 22 followed a title in Linz with a run to the last four in Doha before a first outing on clay was ended in the semi-finals in Charleston by Jessica Pegula in three. 

Samsonova is featuring on the dirt for the first time this year after a solid run to the last eight in Indian Wells. 

This will be the fourth meeting between the two with Samsonova trailing 2-1 in the head-to-head, but prevailing in their most recent showdown last year. 

There’s not much between them in the ranking so it’s a tight call, but Alexandrova may well have the edge having already made a successful transition from hardcourt to clay.
