THE PREDICTION
Two tournament debutants meet in the Premier League final for the right to lift one of the most coveted trophies in the sport, with Jonny Clayton and Jose de Sousa coming through semi-final tussles with Michael van Gerwen and Nathan Aspinall respectively. Clayton won four of the final five legs to clinch a 10-8 victory over MVG, and his clinical finishing throughout the match was what told in the end with the Ferret hitting over 60% of his doubles in a ruthless display. It was a somewhat contrasting victory for De Sousa in the match the followed though, with several lapses in concentration almost costing the Portuguese thrower but he got over the line in the end in a final-leg decider and will now bid for his second major trophy after his Grand Slam of Darts triumph last year.
Incredibly, this will be the seventh time this in-form pair have met in competition this year. Clayton leads that particular statistic 5-1 but – perhaps crucially – De Sousa won their most recent meeting when they locked horns on Tuesday. However, given their respective level of performance earlier on in the evening, we’re marginally favouring Clayton here in a match that could easily go the distance.
