THE PREDICTION

Scottish thrower Ryan Murray enjoyed a solid debut on the Ally Pally stage as he saw off Lourence Ilagan in the first round but his performance was certainly not one that will cause world number one Michael van Gerwen to lose any sleep. Murray averaged 87.11 in victory and he will need to add a sizeable amount onto that if he is to trouble MVG here, even if the Dutchman hasn’t enjoyed one of his better years on the circuit. The three-time world champion’s aura of invincibility is not what it was but he warmed up for this tournament by winning the Players Championship Finals just three weeks ago and he will be determined to make a statement of intent in this opener. A motivated Van Gerwen should win this comfortably and could well average in excess of 100 in the process.
