THE PLAYERS

ARRON MONK

  • Arron Monk is returning to the PDC World Championship stage for the first time in six years and will be looking to win his first ever game on the Alexandra Palace stage having suffered defeats in his opening match in each of his three previous appearances.
  • Monk has in fact only managed to win one set at the World Championship previously and that was on his first appearance when he lost 3-1 to Kevin Painter. He failed to win a set in his defeats against Peter Wright and Justin Pipe on the other two occasions that he qualified for the tournament.
  • Since winning his tour card back at the start of 2018, he has struggled to rise up the rankings and has some work to do if he is to avoid a return to Q School at the start of 2020.

JOSE JUSTICIA

  • Spain's Jose Justicia is making his PDC World Championship debut after winning the South-West Europe Qualifier with a 6-2 win against Spanish World Cup player Toni Alcinas.
  • Justicia dropped just 11 legs during the course of qualification and his average against former World Championship qualifier Alcinas in the final was an impressive 103.
  • The Spaniard has struggled to reach the latter stages in ranking tournaments since he won his tour card in early 2018 and has just two quarter-final appearances under his belt since then.

THE PREDICTION

Both of these players would more than welcome the boost in prize money from an opening round win and the opportunity to try and avoid a return trip to qualifying school in the new year. It’s a very tough match to predict and the odds reflect this. Monk might have played at this venue before but he doesn’t have any good memories of doing so and although it’s not a strong fancy, the prediction is for Justicia to win.
