It was the second top-five win of the 24-year-old’s career and sets him up for a tussle with Damir Dzumhur.
The Bosnian also posted a surprise win as he hit back to defeat 32nd seed Sebastian Baez 1-6 6-1 6-2.
Arnaldi will be the favourite to progress to the round of 16 in Madrid for the first time, but will now have to cope with the pressure of expectation against an opponent who has been as high as 23 in the world.
If the Italian keeps his feet on the ground and produces another clinical and efficient performance, he should continue his run.
