THE LOWDOWN

SOUTH AFRICA WOMEN

  • Although South Africa boast home advantage across this T20 World Cup, the lead-up to the tournament has been dogged by controversy regarding the non-selection of Dane van Niekerk.
  • The all-rounder and former Proteas captain failed a fitness test, which led to her omission and it was a move not well-received by teammates and fans alike.

SRI LANKA WOMEN

  • Sri Lanka’s last major tournament saw them finish runners-up in the 2022 Asia Cup, so there is reason for optimism heading into this competition.
  • As is often the case, plenty will depend upon the form of captain Chamari Athapaththu, who is the team’s best batter with lots of franchise cricket experience over the course of her career.

THE PREDICTION

This represents a tough start for South Africa, with Sri Lanka having proved over the past year that they are no pushovers. However, the latter are yet to make it to the latter stages of the Women’s T20 World Cup and playing in matches of this magnitude represent a huge test for many of their players not experienced in playing T20 leagues around the world. South Africa will miss the presence of Van Niekerk, whose leadership abilities, not to mention her skills with bat and ball make the hosts a poorer side without her. Despite that, they still contain a number of match-winners in the form of Sune Luus, Laura Wolvaardt, Shabnim Ismail and of course Marizanne Kapp, who has understandably voiced her disappointment publicly regarding her wife’s T20 World Cup omission. When taking this into account alongside home advantage being in their favour, South Africa should do enough to overcome Sri Lanka in this Women’s T20 World Cup curtain-raiser.
