THE TEAM NEWS
WEST INDIES
- West Indies’ most recent Test series saw them extend their excellent home record against England, beating them 1-0 across a three-match series, although this time last year they were beaten 0-2 at home to South Africa.
- All-rounder Jason Holder will miss not only this first Test, but the entire series as a whole after having his request to be rested granted by Cricket West Indies, whilst a hamstring injury renders fast bowler Kemar Roach doubtful to play.
- To replace Holder in the squad, the Windies have recalled Raymon Reifer who last featured in Test cricket all the way back in 2017.
BANGLADESH
- Bangladesh proved to the world that they won’t be pushed over in Test cricket away from home when they recorded a shock victory against New Zealand at the start of the year in Tauranga, although since then they have lost four of their last five Tests.
- Batter Yasir Ali won’t feature in this series due to a back injury sustained in a warm-up match, although as it stands Bangladesh have not called up a replacement batter to the squad.
- Shakib Al Hasan will captain the tourists yet again with batter Liton Das as vice-captain following the resignation of Mominul Haque after Bangladesh’s recent poor run of results in Test match cricket.
THE PREDICTION
Although this West Indies Test side are far from the finished product, they will have taken plenty of positives from their series win over England and a strong top order should see them pile on the runs against Bangladesh. The away side are known to struggle away from home on pitches not as spin-friendly as those played on in Bangladesh and when taking into account their poor red-ball form, another difficult assignment looks in prospect for them. Expect West Indies to seize control of this game by accruing a significant first innings lead, which should ultimately lead to them winning this Test, although it is worth keeping a close eye on the weather forecast.
