THE LOWDOWN
SOUTHERN BRAVE
Southern Brave got off to a losing start in the Men’s Hundred, going down to Trent Rockets after being bowled out for 127, six runs short of the Rockets’ total. The Brave will be disappointed at how they collapsed in the face of good bowling on a pitch that wasn’t the easiest for batting, which is unusual for Nottingham. The middle order will need to show significantly more steel going forward and more significant contributions will be expected at the Ageas Bowl from the likes of captain James Vince, not to mention Devon Conway and Tim David.
WELSH FIRE
Hold the front pages! Welsh Fire won their first game of the Men’s Hundred, their first triumph in the competition since 2021. It was a long time coming, but the signs were apparent that this year would be a more successful one with Mike Hussey at the helm at head coach and victory over Manchester Originals adds weight to that theory. Luke Wells opened in a game shortened to 40 balls a-side and smashed 57 from just 23 balls. With a score of 94/3 on the board, Welsh Fire’s bowling superstars took over from there, Shaheen Shah Afridi picking up two wickets in his first two balls, whilst Haris Rauf was as economical as ever. In the end, the Fire won by nine runs.
THE PREDICTION
It’s easy to assume that Welsh Fire will carry the momentum of winning into this game against a side on the back of defeat. However, Southern Brave are expected to prove a significantly tougher proposition on their own patch and it would be no surprise if those top-line Brave batters who failed on Tuesday, fire on all cylinders this time round. Welsh Fire’s batting depth has yet to be really tested after that shortened game vs the Originals and they could come unstuck on a bigger ground against a team well-equipped to play in this environment. Therefore, back Southern Brave to pick up the two points.
BETTING TIP: SOUTHERN BRAVE TO WIN
