THE LOWDOWN
NORTHERN SUPERCHARGERS
Northern Superchargers have never really threatened a top three finish in each of the last two editions of the Men’s Hundred. It’s hard to see that changing with the lack of true star power within the squad. Ben Stokes will surely not play across the entire tournament, although Harry Brook’s presence would provide a welcome bonus if selected. Adil Rashid brings a wealth of experience with his leg-spin having been a key part of England’s limited overs setup for a long time. They’ll be hoping that Tom Banton can provide fireworks at the top of the order, whilst Reece Topley’s return to fitness should help bolster the bowling attack. Adam Lyth has been a regular presence in Yorkshire’s top order for many years and is expected to partner Banton.
BIRMINGHAM PHOENIX
Birmingham Phoenix were finalists in 2021, but didn’t quite hit those heights in 2022. They’ll be desperately hoping that the injury Moeen Ali sustained during the fifth Test against Australia doesn’t keep their captain out of action here. But even without Moeen, the Phoenix top order is a force of nature. Will Smeed and the newly bought Ben Duckett represent a mouth-watering opening pair with Liam Livingstone likely to come in at three. New Zealand’s Adam Milne leads the bowling attack and he should be joined by Tom Helm, who is set for his third season in Birmingham.
THE PREDICTION
On a pitch such as that you’d usually find at Headingley, the batters should rule the roost with runs easy to find at breakneck speed. This benefits Birmingham Phoenix, whose top orders looks significantly more destructive on paper than that of Northern Superchargers. Fans of Liam Livingstone will remember him taking apart the same opponent on the same ground in 2021 and it would be no surprise to see him plunder boundaries once again. In terms of the overall result though, backing a Birmingham Phoenix victory has to be favoured.
