THE TEAM NEWS

BIRMINGHAM PHOENIX WOMEN

  • Birmingham Phoenix were hit hard by the late withdrawal of their two Australian overseas players in Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner, however in 17-year-old Indian international Shafali Verma, they boast one of the biggest hitters in the competition and a future superstar of the game.
  • Captain Amy Jones will no doubt prove an important player for the Phoenix with both the bat and the gloves and her experience as a regular player for England will be crucial in guiding this squad.
  • Jones is not the only England international among the squad, with Georgia Elwiss having featured sporadically for her country, whilst 19-year-old Issy Wong could be set for a breakout tournament with her pace bowling a potent weapon for Birmingham.

LONDON SPIRIT WOMEN

  • England captain Heather Knight leads London Spirit into battle alongside head coach Trevor Griffin, with the two having formed a successful partnership in previous years, winning two Kia Super League titles for Western Storm.
  • Knight is also joined by England batter Tammy Beaumont who will be tasked with getting the Spirit off to a fast start at the top of the order, whilst teammate Freya Davies will lead the bowling attack with her right-arm pace.
  • In West Indian all-rounder Deandra Dottin, London Spirit have an explosive asset with the bat who also provides a bowling option and she lines up alongside South African all-rounder Chloe Tryon and Indian batter Deepti Sharma.

THE PREDICTION

If Birmingham Phoenix are to triumph in their first match of the Hundred, plenty will depend on whether Shafali Verma and/or Amy Jones fires with the bat with both capable of fireworks. However, their side was hit the hardest by the raft of overseas withdrawals and do appear to lack the experience of London Spirit, which in a new format of cricket may be decisive. The likes of Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont are proven on the big stage, knowing what it takes to win matches like these and backed up by the quality of Dottin, Tryon and Sharma, arguably the most impressive overseas trio of all eight teams in the competition, London Spirit should open their Hundred campaign with a win.
