THE TEAM NEWS

SOUTH AFRICA

  • South Africa will be missing numerous Test match regulars here due to their decision to play the IPL, with the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen all unavailable for the Proteas.
  • Opener Dean Elgar is available to captain the side, whilst a number of players could make their international debuts such as Lizaad Williams and Khaya Zondo.

BANGLADESH

  • Bangladesh have enjoyed a wonderful 2022 so far, beating South Africa 1-2 in a three-match ODI series and now have the opportunity to follow on from their outstanding red ball achievement in New Zealand, which saw them beat the Black Caps in a Test match away from home.
  • All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will miss this first Test as he stays home with his family, several of whom are currently in hospital, but captain Mominul Haque could be able to call upon Shakib for the second Test.

THE PREDICTION

In the 12 previous Test matches contested by these two nations, South Africa have won ten with two ending in draws. Bangladesh have never managed to avoid a heavy defeat when facing the Proteas away from home previously, but this match represents their best chance yet to do so. South Africa lost each of their first Test matches played against both India and New Zealand recently and whilst they will still be clear favourites to triumph here, the inexperience of their expected team makes backing Bangladesh at excellent value well worth considering.
