THE TEAM NEWS

KARACHI KINGS

  • Karachi Kings qualified directly to the final in the first qualifier on Saturday when they beat Multan Sultans in a Super Over although they may suffer from not having played the extra game like the Qalandars who will have enjoyed the extra playing time.
  • Babar Azam hit a solid 65 from 53 balls but none of the other batsmen bar Imad Wasim were able to contribute enough or quickly enough so they will simply have to improve on the below-par total of 141/8 they managed on Saturday even if they managed to defend it.
  • Changes to the eleven are unlikely as their issues on Saturday were more due to a lack of cricket than anything else but they will be looking for more from their overseas stars like Hales, Rutherford and Walton with the bat especially.

LAHORE QALANDARS

  • Lahore Qalandars reached their first ever final with victory over Multan Sultans on Sunday and there is clear belief within the camp after these last two wins that they can go on and win this tournament.
  • Once again, the depth of their batting saw them post an excellent total of 182/6 after falling to 111/5 with David Wiese smashing 48 from 21 balls when coming in at number seven and that continues to be one of their major strengths.
  • They will surely go unchanged after these two wins but the only possible candidate to drop out is Mohammad Faizan who has not really contributed so far but they will likely keep faith with the same eleven.

THE PREDICTION

This promises to be a fascinating finale to PSL|5 as the surging Lahore Qalandars have won two matches to reach their first ever final since the tournament restarted, while the Karachi Kings will also be looking for their first ever crown. Emotions are clearly high within the Kings’ camp following the death of coach Dean Jones two months ago and there is certainly a resolve in the squad to win this for him. They will have to step up from their Super Over win against the Sultans however as they were below-par in so many areas that they will have to improve upon. The strength of both teams is their quality all-rounders which means both possess superb depth with the bat especially, and options to use different bowlers if something is not working for their frontline bowlers. Form is certainly on the Qalandars side and they are very hard to oppose based on how they have been playing since the restart. It will be interesting to see how both teams cope with the pressure of their first final and how they retain their composure could well decide this game. The Kings have an emotional reason to dig in while the Qalandars have the edge in form. The marginal preference has to go with the Qalandars but this is one best left to see how the game develops in-play.
