THE LOWDOWN

MULTAN SULTANS

  • Multan Sultans sealed their place in the qualifier early on, courtesy of topping the league stage after winning nine of their ten matches played, three more than their opponents here.
  • The only defeat Multan suffered in the group stage was against the Qalandars in a match that saw both Shan Masood and Mohammad Rizwan fail with the bat and the performance of both openers will be key to the outcome of this contest.

LAHORE QALANDARS

  • Lahore Qalandars finished second-place in the league stage thanks to their net-run-rate after recording the same win-loss record as Peshawar Zalmi, who beat the Qalandars last time out in a Super Over following a tied match.
  • Afghanistan spin-bowler Rashid Khan has left the team to fulfil his international commitments and remains unavailable for the rest of the tournament, a huge blow for Lahore who still boast arguably the strongest fast bowling attack in the competition.

THE PREDICTION

A high-scoring encounter could be on the cards here between two teams who each contain players capable of not only taking full advantage of the powerplay, but also maintaining a high run-rate across the middle overs. In Fakhar Zaman, Lahore Qalandars have the highest run-scorer across the entire tournament, whilst Multan Sultans can call upon the strongest opening partnership of the league stage with Masood and Rizwan having accumulated 457 and 479 runs respectively. However, so often the Sultans have found a winning formula over the course of this season’s PSL whether they are setting or chasing a target and face an opponent significantly weaker following the departure of Rashid. Although they will need to be at their best to overcome the likes of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Fakhar, Multan Sultans have to be favoured to triumph and book their place in the final.
