THE LOWDOWN
NEW ZEALAND
As expected, New Zealand were comfortable winners over South Africa in the first Test. Batting first, the Black Caps racked up 511 to take control early on, Rachin Ravindra accumulating a mammoth 240 alongside another Kane Williamson century. It was the first of two hundreds scored by Williamson across the Test, as New Zealand bowled out South Africa for 162 and 247, with 179/4 from the hosts sandwiched between those two Proteas innings.
SOUTH AFRICA
A thumping 281-run defeat in the first Test leaves South Africa with much to ponder and plan for moving forward if they are to level the series. Captain Neil Brand may have been opening the batting in his first international Test but it was with the ball where he shone most, taking a six-wicket-haul in New Zealand’s first innings and adding another two scalps in the second innings. David Bedingham put up some fourth innings resistance with 87, but it was in vain.
THE PREDICTION
Many saw New Zealand’s strongest Test XI available as being too good for a South Africa side decimated through SA20 commitments and that remains the case for this second game. South Africa will work hard with the ball, despite likely being ground down by the Black Caps’ batters, but the tourists simply don’t look like accumulating the runs to match New Zealand. Therefore, back another home win.
