THE LOWDOWN
NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand couldn’t accumulate the large first innings total that Australia managed in the first Test, which ultimately ended up costing them dear. Losing their opening five wickets for just 25 runs set the tone and despite a recovery to 179, the lead they had conceded couldn’t be pulled back. Chasing 369 to win, the Black Caps were spun out for 196, meaning they now face a fight to save the series having gone 0-1 down in a two-game affair.
AUSTRALIA
Australia perfectly rounded bowling attack may have sealed victory in the first Test, but it were the batters who laid the foundations in their first innings. Specifically Cameron Green, whose incredible 174 not out felt like a ‘coming of age’ innings for a player who hadn’t yet firmly established his place within Australia’s Test team. Scoring 383 kept the tourists ahead of the curve for the remainder of the Test and Nathan Lyon eventually got to work on a wearing fourth innings pitch, taking six wickets as New Zealand were bowled out for a second time with Australia winning by 172 runs.
THE PREDICTION
It took one truly special innings to separate these two nations last time out and New Zealand will believe that they can save the series in Christchurch. The worry though, is whether they can match Australia’s bowling unit when considering that the tourists can call upon a world class spinner. When margins are fine, this may make all the difference, especially if New Zealand are batting in the fourth innings. Utilise the safety of the draw no bet market and back Australia to finish the job.
