THE TEAM NEWS
KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS
- Kolkata Knight Riders got off to an excellent start on Sunday as they edged past the Sunrisers Hyderabad after posting 187/6 when batting first and their bowling unit was able to defend the total by ten runs.
- Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was the man to be chosen ahead of Sunil Narine or Lockie Ferguson and he put in a reasonable performance but it was Nitish Rana who stole the headlines with a stunning 80 from 56 balls while Rahul Tripathi supported him well with 53 from 29.
- It is hard to imagine they will make any changes to their line-up after that performance although with such overseas talent on their roster, it would be no surprise if they managed Andre Russell’s playing time or rotated them.
MUMBAI INDIANS
- Defending champions Mumbai Indians got their campaign off to a losing start once again as they succumbed to a two-wicket loss at the hands of the Royal Challengers Bangalore and after making a good start when batting first, they will have been disappointed to have only posted 159/9 with just 25 coming in the last four overs.
- Their much-vaunted middle order comprising of Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya only combined for 27 runs in 26 balls and after Chris Lynn hit 49 from 35 balls, they should have been closer to 180.
- That innings from Chris Lynn should be enough to keep him in the side and earn him another chance ahead of Quinton de Kock while Marco Jansen’s impressive bowling on his IPL debut may keep him in the side for another game.
THE PREDICTION
KKR got their IPL campaign off to a winning start in their opening match but they now face a Mumbai Indians team that will be fired up after losing their opener. The Indians were incredibly frustrated to lose to RCB and they will come out all guns blazing here to get their opening win. There was nothing fundamentally wrong with their performance other than the fact they did not get enough runs on the board and they will look to remedy that here. There are not too many games when both Pandya brothers or Pollard fail to fire in the middle order and they will fancy their chances against this KKR bowling attack. Mumbai are strong favoured to bounce back here and get the win.
