THE TEAM NEWS
DELHI CAPITALS
- Delhi Capitals are in their worst form of this edition of the IPL so far as they have lost their last three matches and they will be keen to halt this poor run ahead of the play-offs which they need one win to pretty much seal.
- They were chasing an unlikely 219/2 that they conceded against Sunrisers last time out as Kagiso Rabada failed to take a wicket for the first time in 26 IPL matches so it was unsurprising they came nowhere near that total as they fell 86 runs short.
- Their batting was below par also and has not been in good form in recent games so Ricky Ponting will be hoping both his batting and bowling units are able to get back to form here as they face the leaders.
MUMBAI INDIANS
- There have been signs of the Mumbai Indians just easing off the gas a little in recent matches but they were impressive last time out against Royal Challengers in a five-wicket win and they will be keen to seal top spot with a win here.
- They will likely be without Rohit Sharma once again but Quinton de Kock continues to skipper the team well and their batmen are stepping up well in his absence in what is arguably the strong top seven in the tournament right now.
- It is hard to envisage any changes to their line-up as any rotations are more likely in their final group game if they win this match although they are afforded the luxury of doing so if they need to withdraw somebody like Jasprit Bumrah.
THE PREDICTION
All the momentum that Delhi Capitals had in the first half of the tournament has drained after three losses in a row and they desperately need to reverse this trend if they are to confirm their knockout spot and challenge for the title. Ricky Ponting is a firm believer in taking momentum into the business end of tournaments so they desperately need to get a result here. Knowing they are facing such a strong side should spark a reaction among his players. They were hugely disappointing last time out and they need to improve with both bat and ball. The Indians were impressive last time out and assuming their motivation is high, it is hard to oppose them in any game. They have the most consistent and dangerous middle order while their bowling unit is capable of dominating or fighting back in any scenario. On form, it is hard to see anything other than a Mumbai victory unless they do take their foot off the pedal at all.
