THE LOWDOWN
SCOTLAND
- Following their tri-series against Nepal and Namibia as part of the Cricket World Cup League 2, Scotland now turn their attention to the 20 over format of the game as they host New Zealand.
- After resigning from the captaincy last month, batter Kyle Coetzer has since retired from T20i cricket and therefore won’t feature in this match, with Durham batter Michael Jones called up as his replacement.
NEW ZEALAND
- After sweeping Ireland in both an ODI and T20i series, Edinburgh becomes the latest stop on New Zealand’s European tour as they face Scotland for the first time since beating them in last year’s T20 World Cup.
- Michael Rippon could be set to make history if he plays in this first T20i as he would become the first left-arm wrist-spin bowler to represent the Black Caps, whilst a number of first-choice players remain unavailable such as Kane Williamson, Trent Boult and Tim Southee, all of whom are being given an extended rest.
THE PREDICTION
New Zealand were given a real run for their money against Ireland in the ODI series between the two nations, but looked significantly more comfortable across the following T20i series, which saw them comprehensively win all three games. The momentum garnered from that success should see them take their dominance into this match against an opponent in Scotland, who don’t contain the experience or quality within their squad that the Black Caps do. With this in mind, back New Zealand to triumph in the first T20i, with any other outcome being a significant shock.
