THE TEAM NEWS

IRELAND

  • Last summer saw Ireland beaten 0-3 South Africa in a three-match T20i series and this will prove just as, if not more difficult a challenge against India.
  • Ireland will be without long serving opener William Porterfield following his retirement and his experience will be missed in such a tough series.
  • North West Warriors duo Stephen Doheny and Conor Olphert have both been called up with the former currently topping the run-scoring chart in the Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy.

INDIA

  • India are coming off the back of a thrilling T20i series at home in which they came back from 0-2 down to draw with South Africa 2-2 after rain curtailed the final match.
  • With the tourists also playing England in a Test match across the same time period, many first-choice players will be missing once again with IPL-winning captain Hardik Pandya captaining the side in place of Rohit Sharma.
  • Hardik will have plenty of options to choose from within his side, including the pace of Avesh Khan, not to mention the spin-bowling of Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel, whilst Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad could open the batting together again as they did against South Africa.

THE PREDICTION

The weather forecast currently casts a dark shadow over this first T20i, with rain potentially in the offing. That would be a huge shame for what is set to be a sold out crowd at Malahide in what is set to be an exciting day for Irish cricket. No doubt the hosts come into this contest as heavy underdogs as India are a formidable opponent, especially when taking into account the strength-in-depth at their disposal. Should a game be completed here, India are expected to comfortably triumph, but it would be no surprise if the weather prevents that from happening.
