THE LOWDOWN
INDIA
Suryakumar Yadav has been named captain for a series India must contest just four days after losing to Australia in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final. Regular captain Rohit Sharma is rested, whilst vice-captain Hardik Pandya is out injured. Almost all of India’s regular World Cup starting XI will not feature in any of these games with the exception of Yadav and Shreyas Iyer, who won’t play the opening three T20i fixtures but will return for the final two games. Spin-bowler Axar Patel returns from the quadriceps strain which kept him out of the World Cup.
AUSTRALIA
On the back of their World Cup triumph, plenty of Australia’s champions will be missing this tour and going home for some much-needed rest. The likes of skipper Pat Cummins, David Warner, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh, who all started the final in Ahmedabad won’t be involved here. Matthew Wade will captain the tourists, who will have Travis Head available, the centurion and ‘Player of the Match’ in the final. Even head coach Andrew McDonald will be missing, with assistant Andre Borovec taking charge in his absence.
THE PREDICTION
This series is about players with a point to prove showcasing their talents, particularly on the Indian side. They’ll want to make a statement and have huge motivation to perform strongly not only in this first match, but across all five T20i fixtures. Australia can be forgiven for having their minds elsewhere, although they have also made plenty of changes. Those players flying out to India for this series may well need time to adapt to conditions in the subcontinent, which the home players won’t need to worry about. Therefore, India should gain victory in this opening game.
