THE TEAM NEWS

WEST INDIES

  • West Indies took a 1-0 lead in the series after an excellent bowling performance in the second half of the Ireland innings saw them bowl the tourists out for 245 and ultimately win by 24 runs after looking at one stage that they were behind the eightball with Ireland needing 105 to win with eight wickets remaining.
  • Whilst the spine of Kieron Pollard’s side will likely remain untouched, fast bowler Jayden Seales could be brought into the side should the Windies captain wish to rotate his quick bowling stock, whilst the batting is expected to stay as it is.

IRELAND

  • Ireland will have been hugely disappointed to collapse the way they did with the bat after looking on course for an unlikely victory at one stage and they’ll perhaps be rueing the lack of firepower available to them which wouldn’t have seen them under pressure as much with the run rate.
  • Having since recorded negative Covid-19 tests, both opening batter Paul Stirling and all-rounder Shane Getkate will link up with the Irish squad in Kingston and could feature in this second ODI should they arrive in time from Florida, where they had been isolating, whilst both Simi Singh and Ben White are likely to miss both the second and third ODIs after each testing positive before the match on Saturday.

THE PREDICTION

The strength-in-depth of West Indies came to the fore in the first ODI and whilst there was plenty for them to take away from that match which requires work, victory was hard-fought and well-earned. The presence of Stirling if named in the team should give Ireland that bit more impetus in terms of the net run rate in this second ODI, which could be crucial towards them posting a winning score with the bat whether they be setting or chasing a target. However, the middle order spine of West Indies is significantly stronger than that of Ireland when considering the presence of experienced trio Pollard, Roston Chase and Jason Holder. This is expected to wind up the decisive factor between the two nations here and with home advantage also in the favour, a second successive West Indies win looks to be on the cards.
