THE LOWDOWN

WEST INDIES

West Indies were beaten in the two-match Test series but now turn their attention to the ODIs, although they will be without a couple of key players. Both all-rounder Jason Holder and big-hitting wicket-keeper Nicholas Pooran are unavailable, a blow for the Windies to go alongside Keemo Paul’s injury. However, there is a boost with the return of Shimron Hetmyer to the West Indies ODI setup, whilst pace bowler Oshane Thomas is also recalled. Shai Hope captains the side, who are still smarting after failing to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup later this year.

INDIA

India as usual have an abundance of riches to choose from in the 50-over department, although this series does come too soon for the likes of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, both of whom are continuing their respective injury rehabilitations with an eye on playing in September’s Asia Cup. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah also remains out, but aside from that, India will field a very strong side as they look to get back to grips with 50 over cricket. Captain Rohit Sharma could open with a number of players, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad all hoping to earn that spot, with another one of those three possibly batting at three just above Virat Kohli.

THE PREDICTION

West Indies’ white ball cricket is at its lowest ebb right now and the only way is up from here. Former captain Daren Sammy is attempting to lead a revival but it’s going to take time and patience with the Windies likely to suffer some more before finally coming out the other side. With that in mind, India are expected to dominate with both bat and ball over the course of this first ODI and should ultimately get the better of a weakened home team, thus taking a series lead.

TIP: INDIA TO WIN
