THE TEAM NEWS

SRI LANKA

  • Sri Lanka needed some quality from their fourth-wicket partnership between Dinesh Chandimal and Charith Asalanka to secure a hard-fought win against Zimbabwe in their opening ODI clash of the series.
  • Zimbabwe set the Sri Lankans 297 to win but Chandimal and Asalanka combined for 129 with each finishing in the 70s while Pathum Nissanka achieved the same feat to help their side to a five-wicket success with nine balls to spare.

ZIMBABWE

  • Zimbabwe put up a great fight in the first of their three-game series with Sri Lanka but their score of 296 did not prove to be enough as they succumbed to defeat in the closing stages of the Sri Lankan response.
  • The tourists will need to find a little bit more to get the win in this one but Sean Williams will hope to lead the way again after recording a century in the opening clash.

THE PREDICTION

Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe produced an enthralling ODI clash to get their three-game series underway. The two teams shared 596 runs with the Sri Lankans surpassing their target of 297 with just nine balls remaining and they will look to secure the series with another victory here. There were some impressive batting performances but the bowling unit struggled to limit the scoring despite taking nine wickets. That will be an area for the hosts to improve here but even if they are unable to do so, there is enough quality in their batting line-up to get the job done and claim an unassailable lead in the series.
