THE PREDICTION

The first of three ODIs between South Africa and England are of significant importance to both, despite it being sandwiched in-between the inaugural SA20 tournament. In the case of the Proteas, they must win one of these games, otherwise the expectation is that they will not automatically qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup later this year. For England, they need to lock down their best 50-over team ahead of that tournament and the return of fast bowler Jofra Archer represents a huge boost for them.

On paper, the sheer firepower and depth that England possess with the bat could see them take the game from South Africa. However, the hosts can call upon a number of world class bowlers to counter that such as Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada. The importance of this match from their perspective in particularly cannot be underestimated and when it comes down to the crunch, the desire of South Africa to win compared to that of England may prove pivotal, so consider backing victory for the Proteas.
