THE LOWDOWN

ENGLAND

Joe Root was unable to gain the time at the crease he wanted on his home ground this past Wednesday after the first ODI was abandoned without a ball bowled due to rain. Since then, there has been a change within the England squad with Somerset batter Tom Kohler-Cadmore called up. He will replace Jason Roy, who following his omission from the final England World Cup squad, has withdrawn his availability for this series.

IRELAND

For Ireland, little has changed in terms of their motivations following the opening ODI being washed out. Batters such as Harry Tector and Paul Stirling will need to contribute significantly in terms of runs scored, especially on a ground such as Trent Bridge. Fast bowler Josh Little is also a key man for the tourists with the ball as his pace is capable of causing trouble to England.

THE PREDICTION

On a ground as high-scoring as Trent Bridge, expect England to impose their authority upon Ireland from a batting perspective, especially if they end up batting first. It’s hard to see the visitors being able to match England on this front, so a home victory has to be favoured in this second ODI, provided the rain doesn’t intervene.
