THE TEAM NEWS
AUSTRALIA
- Australia’s gruelling season appears to be catching up with them after they suffered a 3-0 series whitewash against South Africa in but they do not have any time to dwell on that as they host New Zealand in a three-match series.
- They will have little time to prepare for this series with the Australians set to spend just several days back in the country following their tour of South Africa and the physical and mental fatigue could take its toll once again in this series.
- Despite the concerns voiced by coach Justin Langer, he has named the same squad for this series with the exception of Jhye Richardson who has been released to play domestic cricket whilst it is anticipated that Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc will feature in this contest after the pair were left out of the team for the final game with South Africa.
NEW ZEALAND
- New Zealand showed why they came so close to being crowned world champions last summer as they whitewashed India in their most recent ODI series and they will look to build on that as they head to Australia.
- The Blackcaps produced that 3-0 win over the Indians without the likes of Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson but all three come back into contention for this series in what is a major boost for the tourists.
- There is no place for either Hamish Bennett or Scott Kuggeleijn who make way for the returning trio but Kyle Jamieson has retained his place in the squad after making a huge impression since his introduction to international cricket.
THE PREDICTION
Australia looked weary in their series against South Africa and despite looking like they could pick up a win or two, it did not transpire as they were on the end of a 3-0 whitewash. They now have little time to recover from that trip as they return to home soil to face a New Zealand side that will be full of confidence after they impressively defeated India in their last ODI series. A 3-0 scoreline for the Blackcaps was well deserved and with some key players coming back into their squad following injury, New Zealand should be able to build on that to take advantage of a fatigued Australia to claim the win in this opening game and a first win in Australia since 2009.
