THE LOWDOWN

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE

  • Royal Challengers Bangalore blew a superb opportunity to win their opening game of this year’s Indian Premier League as they succumbed to defeat against Punjab Kings despite looking comfortable for much of the contest.
  • RCB posted a winnable total of 205/2 with Faf du Plessis doing most of the damage with a knock of 88 but they could not contain Odean Smith whose effort of 25* from just eight deliveries turned the game on its head.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS

  • Kolkata Knight Riders got the better of Chennai Super Kings in a repeat of last year’s IPL final as they kicked off the new campaign with a good win and they now have the foundation to try and better last year’s finish.
  • KKR got off to a great start with Umesh Yadav removing both openers with the pair managing just three runs between them and they never looked back with Ajinkya Rahane’s 44 leading the chase as they achieved their target of 132 with nine balls to spare.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a thrilling contest between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders with both teams looking well-matched in terms of the quality that they boast throughout their respective rosters. RCB come into this on the back of a loss in their opening game but showed enough with the bat to suggest that they can go a long way in this tournament while KKR were able to get the better of last year’s champions to get their title assault off to a great start. With the match result difficult to call, it may be best to side with Faf du Plessis to carry on where he left off his RCB’s opening game and he can produce another good knock with the bat with the captain able to score at least 30 runs.
