THE LOWDOWN
GUJARAT TITANS
- Gujarat Titans’ most notable acquisition for their maidan IPL season was that of Rashid Khan, arguably the best T20i bowler in the world, who has left Sunrisers Hyderabad to spearhead this Gujarat bowling attack, which also includes Mohammed Shami and Lockie Ferguson.
- England white ball opener Jason Roy’s withdrawel from the 2022 IPL saw the Titans move to bring in another Afghanistan star in Rahmanullah Gurbaz as his replacement, whilst the likes of Hardik Pandya, Vijay Shankar and Rahul Tewatia add balance to the side.
LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS
- Lucknow Super Giants are led in their opening season by Indian international batter and former Punjab Kings star K.L Rahul, with Avesh Khan, Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya ensuring a strong Indian core to this side.
- Arguably the most exciting factor about Lucknow will be the top-order partnership between K.L Rahul and former IPL winner Quinton de Kock, although the South African’s availability for this match is uncertain, whilst an injury to fast bowler Mark Wood has seen the Super Giants draft in Andrew Tye as a replacement.
THE PREDICTION
An intriguing clash lies ahead between these two brand new franchises who will each be desperate to put their own stamp on the competition. The loss of Roy has no doubt hit Gujarat Titans’s batting plans drawn up before the mega auction, however their bowling attack led by the outstanding Rashid looks strong. However, they may well have met their match in K.L Rahul, who is expected to lead this Lucknow Super Giants team very strongly and although they are expecting to be missing a couple of important overseas players, the shrewd move is to back them to gain their first ever IPL victory.
