THE LOWDOWN

DELHI CAPITALS

  • New faces this year for the Delhi Capitals included Australian duo David Warner and Mitch Marsh, alongside Indian international Shardul Thakar, who starred for Chennai Super Kings last season, whilst the likes of Avesh Khan, Shikhar Dhawan and Kagiso Rabada have left the franchise.
  • Both Warner and Marsh are expected to be unavailable for this first Delhi Capitals game, whilst injury is also likely to rule out South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje.

MUMBAI INDIANS

  • Mumbai Indians were very shrewd across the IPL mega auction, buying back young Indian star Ishan Kishan at a big price, whilst replacing players such as Hardik Pandya and Trent Boult with Singaporean Tim David and England T20i star Tymal Mills, whilst Jofra Archer has also been signed despite injury almost certainly ruling him out of the 2022 IPL.
  • The departure of South African Quinton de Kock means that Kishan will open the batting here with captain Rohit Sharma, whilst top order batter Suryakumar Yadav is doubtful for this opening contest due to injury.

THE PREDICTION

This showdown represents a repeat of the 2020 final which saw Mumbai Indians win their fifth IPL title and they’ll be confidence of making the perfect start in a bid for a record sixth triumph. Their side looks well played to hit the ground running early on, whilst Delhi Capitals could well come out of the blocks slower without the likes of Warner and Marsh to call upon early on, not to mention Nortje’s injury. With that in mind, back Mumbai Indians led by a tactical genius of skipper Rohit Sharma to accrue victory in their first match back in their home city since 2019.
