THE LOWDOWN
CHENNAI SUPER KINGS
- The 2021 IPL winners enter their opening match of this year’s tournament weakened by the absence of all-round Moeen Ali due to a visa issue, whilst bowler Deepak Chahar is expected to miss out through injury, leaving new captain Ravindra Jadeja with some difficult selection decisions to make.
- New Zealand international batter Devon Conway is likely to make his debut at the top of the order and should fill the void left by the departure of Faf du Plessis, although England T20i bowler Chris Jordan could be given the nod to play instead, with the experienced Robin Uthappa playing instead of Conway.
KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS
- This Kolkata Knight Riders unit is vastly different from the team that reached the 2021 IPL final, with previous captain Eoin Morgan having been released at the end of the season and replaced in the mega auction by Indian international batter Shreyas Iyer, who cost an eye-watering INR 12.25 crores to buy.
- Iyer previously captained Delhi Capitals to the 2020 IPL final and will lead a KKR side containing a number of familiar faces from the West Indies, with all-rounders Andre Russell and Sunil Narine having each been retained.
THE PREDICTION
Chennai Super Kings boasts a settled, experienced side who will no doubt be major players once again in this year’s IPL, even though long-standing skipper MS Dhoni has passed captaincy duties onto teammate Ravi Jadeja. However, they do not come into this contest at full-strength which opens up a window of opportunity for Kolkata Knight Riders to exploit here. Although the losses of both Moeen and Chahar are significant from a CSK perspective, KKR will be without Australian superstar Pat Cummins, which could prove a decisive factor in this contest when taking into account how important a role he would normally play with the ball. Therefore, consider backing the reigning champions Chennai Super Kings to get their title defence off to a winning start.
