THE TEAM NEWS
MUMBAI INDIANS
- Three straight defeats for Mumbai Indians since the resumption of the IPL now see their play-off hopes hanging by a thread, with their latest match seeing them thrashed by Royal Challengers Bangalore, losing by 54 runs.
- That loss to RCB saw Mumbai dismissed for just 111 and it would be no surprise to see changes in the batting order for this one, with the likes of Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya moved up the order when considering the struggles of Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan above them.
PUNJAB KINGS
- Punjab Kings are in action for the first time since Saturday, which saw them narrowly defeat a struggling Sunrisers Hyderabad side by five runs, defending a low total of 125/7 on a slow pitch.
- Spin-bowler Ravi Bishnoi was brought into the side for that game after being left out against Rajasthan Royals and he responded by taking three wickets with an economy rate of just six runs an over, a performance that should ensure his selection against Mumbai.
THE PREDICTION
Both these two sides are locked on eight points, making this a crucial contest in terms of play-off qualification. Mumbai Indians so far have been unable to get to grips with the conditions in the UAE, with their batters not having hit their strides as expected. The Kings meanwhile, boast an opening partnership currently in great form, as both captain KL Rahul and Manyank Agarwal have combined over the majority of this year’s IPL to give their side a good start whether they be batting first or chasing a target. It would be no surprise however, if Punjab bowlers such as Bishnoi, Australian Nathan Ellis and Indian spin-bowler Harpreet Brar help tie down the Mumbai batters with their variations and slow deliveries. Combine this with the class of frontline bowler Mohammed Shami and Punjab Kings are likely to inflict more pain upon a Mumbai Indians unit, whose confidence will be extremely low. Therefore, back Punjab Kings to emerge triumphant here.
