THE LOWDOWN

INDIA

Coach: Rahul Dravid

Captain: Rohit Sharma

  • As hosts and with a star-studded squad, India came into this tournament as favourites and they have changed that tag now to ‘heavy favourites’. A six-wicket victory against Australia on the opening day was followed up by an eight-wicket demolition of Afghanistan and then a seven-wicket victory over arch-rivals Pakistan.
  • The Indians have bowled out both Australia and Pakistan, to supposed fellow title contenders, for less than 200 and chased Afghanistan’s target of 273 in just 35 overs. With bat and ball, it is going to take something special for them to be beaten over the next month.

BANGLADESH

Coach: Chandika Harthurusingha

Captain: Shakib Al Hasan

  • Bangladesh began with a comfortable six-wicket victory in the foothills of the Himalayas at Dharamsala before a defeat at the same venue against England, which was then followed up by a comfortable eight-wicket loss to New Zealand in Hyderabad.
  • Stars have fired at different points with five of Bangladesh’s top six all scoring half-centuries in their opening three matches. Tanzid Hasan Tamim, who came in for the controversially dropped Tamim Iqbal on the eve of the tournament, is the only member of that six yet to make a significant contribution to the team’s total.

THE PREDICTION

Not many teams go through an entire ICC World Cup unbeaten, even the winners, but India very much look like the best possible team to be able to achieve that feat With all bases covered as we head to the first match in Pune, they are taking on a Bangladeshi side that came into the tournament with a little bit of a cloud hanging over them due to the Tamim Iqbal scenario and, despite an opening match victory, things have not necessarily looked brighter on the field so another comfortable and heavy Indian win is to be expected.

BETTING TIP: INDIA TO WIN
