THE LOWDOWN

SOUTH AFRICA

Coach: Rob Walter

Captain: Temba Bavuma

  • It’s been an ideal World Cup campaign for South Africa so far but now we’ve reached that stage of the tournament where previous Proteas sides have always fallen short, leading to the infamous ‘chokers’ tag which has plagued them for many years now.
  • Captain Temba Bavuma has participated in training on Monday ahead of the semi-finals as he battles to be fit despite a hamstring injury, although Reeza Hendricks is on standby to play if required.

AUSTRALIA

Coach: Andrew McDonald

Captain: Pat Cummins

  • Five-time Cricket World Cup champions Australia lost their opening two matches of the competition, before going on to win their next seven, ensuring their place in the knockout stage.
  • After being rested against Bangladesh, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell will both come back into the team, most likely at the expense of Sean Abbott and Marcus Stoinis, whilst Josh Inglis will be lucky to keep his place having had a poor tournament with the bat.

THE PREDICTION

We’ve been here before when it comes to South Africa. Semi-final heartbreak has been in their DNA when it comes to the Cricket World Cup and often against Australia. Who can forget the infamous tie of 1999 and Allan Donald’s run-out which saw the Aussie through due to a higher group stage finish. Or the 2007 semi-final in-which the Proteas were bundled out for just 149, leading to a simple run-chase. History can weigh heavily on a side and Australia just know how to win cricket matches at this stage of proceedings. Pat Cummins’ side boast the batting firepower to match South Africa’s and a bowling attack capable of running through any team on their day. Combine that with their unflappable character and backing Australia to inflict more World Cup pain upon South Africa has to be favoured.

BETTING TIP: AUSTRALIA TO WIN
