THE LOWDOWN

PAKISTAN

Coach: Grant Bradburn

Captain: Babar Azam

  • Pakistan are facing an uphill struggle at this point if they wish to make it to the semi-finals after being thoroughly outplayed by Afghanistan in Chennai, losing by eight wickets in what was their third consecutive group stage defeat.
  • With just two centuries across the tournament so far, the failure of their top order batters to convert starts into big scores is starting to really hurt them, as is the under-performance of their spin-bowlers, most notably Shadab Khan.

SOUTH AFRICA

Coach: Rob Walter

Captain: Temba Bavuma

  • Another brutal batting display by South Africa saw them take Bangladesh apart, scoring 382/5 batting first, giving their bowlers plenty of runs in the bank to work with and leading to a 149-run victory.
  • Captain Temba Bavuma has stated that the Proteas could play leg-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi with the pitch in Chennai likely to offer turn for the bowlers, whilst Bavuma himself is likely to make his return after a period of illness.

THE PREDICTION

The sheer consistency of South Africa’s batting has to be admired with most bowling attacks being taken apart across 50 overs. If Pakistan bowl like they did against Afghanistan then they are in for some serious punishment here at the hands of a team who prioritise boundaries in any given match situation. It’s hard to predict what Pakistan will turn up here, but the Proteas in their current form simply have to be backed for further success.

BETTING TIP: SOUTH AFRICA TO WIN
