THE LOWDOWN
NETHERLANDS
Coach: Ryan Cook
Captain: Scott Edwards
- Netherlands have given themselves an excellent chance of finishing inside the top eight of the group stage following their second victory of the tournament last weekend, an 87-run triumph over Bangladesh.
- They’ll need to break a record of four consecutive defeats against Afghanistan in ODI cricket to come out on top here and having won both their group stage games batting first, they are likely to adopt the same strategy should they win the toss.
AFGHANISTAN
Coach: Jonathan Trott
Captain: Hashmatullah Shahidi
- Afghanistan won a crucial encounter against Sri Lanka in Pune, making it four points from the last four available to them and keeping their dream of qualifying for the semi-finals still very much a reality with just two points separating them from the top four.
- Despite taking three wickets against Pakistan, spin-bowler Noor Ahmad did not feature vs Sri Lanka, but could come back into contention when taking into account how bowler-friendly the Lucknow pitch was when India took on England.
THE PREDICTION
Although Afghanistan have historically dominated the head-to-head records between themselves and Netherlands, they’ll be a huge test, particularly from a batting perspective when you consider how they rolled out Bangladesh for just 142. But Afghanistan’s batters have shown that they are made of sterner stuff and the bowling attack could be afforded plenty of joy on a pitch such as Lucknow. Back Afghanistan to keep themselves in the semi-final race with a vital third successive win.
BETTING TIP: AFGHANISTAN TO WIN
