THE LOWDOWN

INDIA

Coach: Rahul Dravid

Captain: Rohit Sharma

  • Many expected India to reach the 2023 Cricket World Cup final on their own soil, but not many thought they would do it with such dominance, winning ten games from ten games, having accrued a 100% group stage record before beating New Zealand by 70 runs to book their final spot.
  • It’s incredible to think that Mohammed Shami wasn’t an original starter for India earlier in the tournament, but injury to Hardik Pandya has seen him come in and establish himself as not only India’s number one wicket-taker, but the number one wicket-taker in the competition as a whole.

AUSTRALIA

Coach: Andrew McDonald

Captain: Pat Cummins

  • Serial winners when it comes to knockout 50-over World Cup cricket, Australia once again showed their credentials when it really mattered in the semi-finals, breaking South African hearts once again and advancing through to the final where they will play to win their sixth Cricket World Cup title.
  • They didn’t make it easy for themselves against the Proteas chasing 213 on a turning track in Kolkata, but a fast start from openers Travis Head and David Warner set up the platform for the rest of their batters to take their time, play and caution and eventually edge Australia home with three wickets remaining.

THE PREDICTION

It will be a showdown to end all showdowns in Ahmedabad. The stand-out team across the whole tournament with home advantage in their favour against a side accustomed to winning when the trophy is at stake. Australia defeated India 20 years ago in Melbourne, the only other occasion in which these two nations faced off in a 50-over Cricket World Cup final. But this time, India occupies home turf and over 100k of their fans will make for an unforgettable atmosphere at Narendra Modi Stadium.

When taking into account the bowling attacks on show here, it would be no surprise if this match turned out to be fairly low-scoring as both teams hunt those crucial early wickets. Each are capable of taking ten wickets, but what may end up being absolutely key is the form of India’s core top order compared to that of Australia. Whilst India’s unit, led by Virat Kohli at number three have gone out and consistently converted starts into big scores, the likes of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne have struggled to do the same for the Aussies.

It’s impossible to overlook just how brilliant India’s bowlers are, especially on their own patch and it would be no surprise to see them tip this final their way. Expect a classic final, but in terms of the final outcome, back India to gain revenge for 2003 and lift their first ICC major trophy since 2013.

BETTING TIP: INDIA TO WIN
