THE LOWDOWN

ENGLAND

Coach: Matthew Mott

Captain: Jos Buttler

  • England were on the receiving end of their worst Cricket World Cup result since 2015 this past Sunday as Afghanistan overcame the defending champions by 69 runs in what was a convincing victory.
  • Alarm bells have no doubt been sounded regarding England after two defeats in their opening three group matches, but their trump card is set to finally be unleashed here as all-rounder and 2019 hero Ben Stokes has been passed fit to play.

SOUTH AFRICA

Coach: Rob Walter

Captain: Temba Bavuma

  • If people thought that Afghanistan win over England was the biggest Cricket World Cup upset in years, South Africa surpassed it 48 hours later, losing to associate nation Netherlands by 38 runs and blowing their 100% group stage record in the process.
  • For once, the Proteas batters simply didn’t show up and paid the price big time with no player reaching a half-century, so they cannot afford another misfire here with momentum such a huge factor in a tournament such as this.

THE PREDICTION

Both these two nations have the firepower within their batting to drag the game away from their opponents, so it will be interesting to see them go up against each other. England’s bowling simply has to improve otherwise they will be taken to the cleaners by this brutal South African top order. However, the presence of Stokes presents a wildcard not yet seen among the England team and may well prove the catalyst for a significant upturn in performance levels across Jos Buttler’s entire side. When taking this into account, it looks a shrewd play to back England beating the Proteas.

BETTING TIP: ENGLAND TO WIN
