THE LOWDOWN
ENGLAND
Coach: Matthew Mott
Captain: Jos Buttler
- England bounced back strongly from their loss at the hands of New Zealand, taking apart Bangladesh by 137 runs in Dharamsala, scoring 364/9 after being asked to bat first, before bowling out their opponents for just 227 in response.
- Bringing Reece Topley into the side proved to be a good move, the left-arm swing bowler making full use of helpful conditions to pick up four wickets, including three of Bangladesh’s top four batters.
AFGHANISTAN
Coach: Jonathan Trott
Captain: Hashmatullah Shahidi
- Afghanistan are still without a point so far in the group stage after being outclassed by India’s top order in Delhi, their score 272/8 being comfortably chased down by India with 15 overs and eight wickets to spare.
- Although Afghanistan won the toss, they were far too ponderous in their innings, not chasing boundaries early on and once India had got off to a flying start, the game was effectively over
THE PREDICTION
The last time these two sides faced off in the ICC Cricket World Cup, England racked up 397/6 back in 2019, winning by 150 runs. The sheer brute force, quality and depth that the world champions have is likely to once again overwhelm this Afghanistan bowling unit, who had no answer to India’s top order on Wednesday. Delhi has been the best surface for batting so far across the tournament, so this may be a very uncomfortable experience for Afghanistan. Expect England to comfortably win.
BETTING TIP: ENGLAND TO WIN
