THE LOWDOWN

AUSTRALIA

Coach: Andrew McDonald

Captain: Pat Cummins

  • Australia’s batters had no answer to the heat and spin in Chennai, bowled out for 199 on Sunday against India with none of their players managing to reach the half-century mark, ultimately leading to a six-wicket loss.
  • The big decision to make now is whether Australia should change their team following defeat and conditions in Lucknow will no doubt play a part in such a call, but what is certainly likely to be adjusted is their style of batting, with more emphasis expected to be on aggression.

SOUTH AFRICA

Coach: Rob Walter

Captain: Temba Bavuma

  • South Africa made history in Delhi this past Saturday, batting first against Sri Lanka and successfully accumulating the highest total in ICC Cricket World Cup history, smashing 428/5 in 50 overs, ultimately winning by 102 runs.
  • Three Proteas players scored centuries, Quinton De Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram, the latter hitting the fastest in ICC Cricket World Cup history having reached the three-figure mark in just 49 balls.

THE PREDICTION

A really exciting battle awaits with a fired-up South Africa looking to knock off a side desperate for a positive response following their spin woes in Chennai. Lucknow should be a better pitch from a batting point of view, but in South Africa they take on a batting line-up at the top of their game. However, the Proteas have not yet faced a bowling attack of Australia’s class with Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins a fearsome three-pronged pace attack. If anyone can stunt this South African top order they can and with that in mind, backing Australia to get the better of their opponents here should be seriously considered.
