THE LOWDOWN

ENGLAND

England aren’t necessarily starting a new white-ball cycle but it is the first time in a long time that the white-ball formats and a white-ball series, especially at home, has taken precedence with England choosing a full-strength squad for their T20I and ODI series against New Zealand. There are still players in this three-match T20 squad against the Kiwi’s, though, that will be aiming for a late call-up to the 2023 World Cup squad when that has to be finalised in a month or so, most notably Harry Brook, who scored an exhilarating century in The Hundred for the Northern Superchargers last month.

NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand are, at every major global event, a side that can overperform expectation by simply being genuinely just difficult to beat. That said, though, they also have some genuinely world class performers but are without some key players for this T20 series, such as Trent Boult and injured duo Jimmy Neesham and Kane Williamson with a little more experimentation as they prioritise the upcoming ODI World Cup.

THE PREDICTION

It feels unusual to present anything an English sporting side does as just sheer, robotic dominance but that is the case with The Three Lions’ white-ball setup. There are absentees for this upcoming series against New Zealand but the depth of their squad and rate to which England produce players, helped by the introduction of The Hundred and exposing players to big-game situations, is actually quite remarkable; albeit expected given their relative resources. New Zealand punch above their weight at tournaments and with a rested, experimental squad for this T20I series, an English win is the expected outcome up in Durham.
