THE TEAM NEWS

SYDNEY THUNDER

  • Sydney Thunder got back to winning ways in emphatic fashion last time out, beating Brisbane Heat by a whopping 53 runs after racking up 196 with the bat before successfully bowling out Chris Lynn’s side at the Gabba.
  • The Thunder have recently brought in Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain as an overseas player and whether he will make his debut here depends on whether he completes his period of isolation in time, however they could be without another fast bowler in Saqib Mahmood, who is likely to be called up to Ashes duty by England ahead of the Boxing Day test at the MCG.

SYDNEY SIXERS

  • Sydney Sixers were run close by a Rashid Khan inspired Adelaide Strikers last Tuesday, but eventually prevailed to make it four wins from five BBL fixtures played so far for the reigning champions.
  • Bowler Sean Abbott made history against the Strikers upon his return to the side, becoming the BBL’s all-time leading wicket taker and he’ll no doubt play a key role here against their city rivals.

THE PREDICTION

The Sydney derby is always a special occasion and being played on Boxing Day makes it more so. Sydney Thunder are no doubt capable of toppling Sydney Sixers on their day, especially when taking into account the firepower provided from overseas batters Alex Hales and Sam Billings respectively. However, the Thunder are an inconsistent side and are just as likely to collectively wilt against a very strong opponent in the Sixers, who in contrast are the epitome of consistency. However, the likelihood is that this contest may well find itself disrupted by the weather, with rain forecast throughout the scheduled hours of play at present. Whilst the in-form Sydney Sixers would be worth backing should the prospects of play become brighter, the smart play would be to wait right up until the scheduled start time to assess the weather conditions before making any moves.
