THE LOWDOWN
SYDNEY THUNDER
- Sydney Thunder produced a great batting display to earn their first victory of BBL|10 as they were able to put in a brilliant chase to reach their target of 179 for the win against Brisbane Heat.
- That total looked daunting when Alex Hales fell for a first-ball duck and he was quickly followed to the dugout by skipper Callum Ferguson who only managed four balls before he too was removed for nought to leave the Thunder at 1/2.
- That soon became 22/3 when Usman Khawaja fell but a great response from the middle and lower order rescued the win with Daniel Sams the hero thanks to a match-winning 65* off just 25 as he blasted the Heat bowling attack with seven maximums during that knock.
PERTH SCORCHERS
- Perth Scorchers were left frustrated in their efforts to pick up their first win of the campaign as the rain ruined their chances of upsetting the well-fancied Melbourne Stars despite putting themselves into a strong position.
- The Scorchers made 158/6 from their reduced 17 overs, leaving the Stars with a tough target of 76 from just six overs and despite reducing their opponents to 10/1 off seven balls, the wicket of Marcus Stoinis signalled the end of the match as the rain continued to fall.
- Perth will take heart from their efforts in that game and know that if they can match what they showed in that contest they will not be too far away, while they have also received a boost for this clash with Jason Behrendorff added to the squad to bolster their bowling options.
THE PREDICTION
Perth Scorchers looked well-placed to earn a surprise win over Melbourne Stars but the weather curtailed their chances of success and they had to settle for two points from the no result. They will hope to build on that display as they take on Sydney Thunder, a side that did manage to earn their first win last time out. They produced a great recovery with the bat to see off Brisbane Heat but their top order must contribute more this time around. The Thunder will hand a debut to New Zealand paceman Adam Milne in what will be a huge boost to their bowling attack and while this game could go either way, the Kiwi’s inclusion should give the Sydney outfit the edge to snatch this one.
