THE LOWDOWN
AUSTRALIA
- Reigning champions Australia began their campaign by being hammered by New Zealand. They came through against Sri Lanka in a relatively modest chase thanks to the impressive exploits of Marcus Stoinis but their wash-out against England the other day leaves the hosts under pressure going into their final two matches against Ireland and Afghanistan.
- The Australians have some selection dilemma’s with skipper Aaron Finch continuing to underperform, following his very difficult knock against Sri Lanka, albeit remaining unbeaten until the end. Adam Zampa should return for Ashton Agar in the spin department after the leg-spinner had a bout of COVID-19.
IRELAND
- Ireland came through the first round of this men’s T20 World Cup with impressive but surprising victories against Scotland and the West Indies. They followed that up with another impressive World Cup win against England in Melbourne. They benefited from the rain cutting the match short but had been the better team throughout the game.
- There are no injury concerns for the Irish and Fionn Hand, who came into the side against England and took the wicket of Ben Stokes, is expected to keep his place ahead of this match with weather conditions favouring an extra seamer instead of the potential option of Simi Singh.
THE PREDICTION
Whilst it would be foolish to write the Irish off, given their heroics in this tournament already, it will take something special to overcome an Australian side with home advantage that are under pressure and must win. It is set up for the Australians to just about click into gear and put the pressure on the likes of New Zealand in England for the top two and semi-final qualification. Australia should win but, given the exploits of Josh Little and Aaron Finch so far in this tournament, the Aussie skipper putting in a low score looks a good bet.
